Best Places to Retire in Montana

Montana does not have an active program to attract retirees to the state. MT is a very large state geographically but one that does not have many people or towns. Fortunately there are some excellent places to retire here with many different types of retirement lifestyles. For example you could retire to a small city, a college town like Missoula, or find a place in the country.

Here are some of our favorite places to retire in MT:

  • Missoula, MT - Missoula is a small city of 63,000 and the home of the University of Montana. Parts of the movie "A River Runs Through It" was filmed here.
  • Whitefish - Whitefish has to be one of the most spectacular settings on the planet. It has a huge lake, a ski resort, and mountains all around. It is an upscale town and stunning. Even has an Amtrak stop.
  • Helena - This, the capitol of Montana, is located in very southern Montana. It's a former gold mining town of about 28,000. Home prices are lower here than in many other parts of the state.
  • Bozeman - Bozeman is in the Gallatin Valley surrounded by mountains. Montana State University makes this a college town. Real estate values in this Metro are the highest in the state according to Zillow.com.
